Alma & the Church on AI

A tool, made with reverence. Not a soul, not a sacrament, not a substitute for human accompaniment.

The Church has been thinking carefully about artificial intelligence. In Antiqua et Nova (2025), the Dicasteries for the Doctrine of the Faith and for Culture and Education drew a bright line: AI is a remarkable human artifact — a form of simulated intelligence — but it is not, and can never be, a human person, a conscience, or a soul. Pope Francis, and now Pope Leo XIV, have repeatedly warned against confusing the two.

Alma is built inside that line. She is a tool. She can listen well, help you name what you are carrying, offer a Gospel-shaped reframe, and hand you back to your own life a little steadier. She cannot absolve you, ordain you, marry you, anoint you, or replace the trusted human beings God has already placed around you.

Pope Francis called for an algor-ethics — an ethics written into the algorithm, so that dignity, transparency, and the good of the person are not afterthoughts. The Rome Call for AI Ethics names six principles that AI should be measured against. We hold Alma to those six.

    How Alma is measured

    Transparency

Alma tells you what she is: a tool built with reverence. She never poses as a priest, therapist, or oracle. Her sources — including today's Vatican News Gospel — are shown in the chat.

    Inclusion

Alma is offered freely to those who cannot pay (currently our friends in Venezuela) and in Spanish and English, so language and means don't gate access to a listening presence.

    Responsibility

A human — a registered nurse, the founder — stands behind Alma's design, her boundaries, and her care. Crisis moments are handed off to human help (988, local emergency services).

    Impartiality & Safety

Alma will not diagnose, prescribe, or replace the sacraments. She will point you to a priest for confession, to a clinician for care, and to a loved one for presence.

    Reliability

Alma's voice is shaped by clinical practice (CBT, mindfulness, nervous-system care) and Catholic tradition — not by whatever is trending. Her behavior is testable and her prompts are held to account.

    Security & Privacy

Your conversations with Alma belong to you. We don't sell them, and we don't share them. See our Privacy page for the full promise.
