When You Can't Pray, Breathe

There are seasons when prayer goes quiet. Not because faith left, but because the body is carrying more than language can hold.
Breath came first
Before there were words there was breath. If you can only manage an inhale and a long exhale, you are still turning toward God. Let that count, because it does.
A practice for wordless days
- Sit. Let your feet find the floor.
- Inhale through the nose for a slow count of four.
- Exhale through the mouth for a slow count of six.
- On each exhale, if anything comes, let it be one word: help, stay, mercy.
Repeat for ten breaths. Then stop. You have prayed.
Be patient with the return
Words come back. They usually come back sideways — in the car, in the shower, mid-sentence with someone else. Until then, breath keeps the line open.
